Gold and silver chains and charms

To care for your Philippa Herbert Ltd. jewellery we recommend that you use the gold and silver polishing cloths included with your purchase, should your jewellery need cleaning further, warm water, washing-up liquid and a very soft toothbrush / bottle brush should be used.  Do not use any abrasive cleaning utensils as this will scratch the silver or gold surface and damage the engraving.  Rinse and dry gently with a soft cloth or tissue after cleaning.  Occasionally the charms will develop a dark smudge at the top, near the jump ring.  This is more likely to happen when the weather is warm, but do not worry, this smudge is caused by the accumulations of body lotion, sunscreens, oils etc and can easily by wiped away with a soft cloth.

Wearing multiple charms together will cause the charms to cloud and dull in different places depending on the sizes and styles of the charms being worn together.  This is perfectly normal and we advise that you do not over clean your charms as this can damage the engraving and the surface of the charms.  Your charms will age naturally over time and develop a wonderful patina, which is totally unique to them; however, should you wish your charms to be professionally polished please contact us and for a small charge, we can arrange this for you.

To keep your jewellery in pristine condition please store you chains and charms separately.

If you have any questions about cleaning your jewellery please do not hesitate to contact us on customercare@philippaherbert.co.uk

Gemstones

Although gemstones are some of the hardest natural materials in the world, the cut and setting can make them vulnerable. Larger stones in particular should be worn and stored with care.

Porous gemstones, including turquoise, opals and pearls can be stained by oils or liquids,  so it is particularly important to avoid contact with face creams, sun tan lotion and household chemicals.   Wash porous gemstones in lukewarm water and polish with a soft cloth.  Porous gemstones are susceptible to damage when hot, so avoid wearing jewellery to the beach as sea salt, sand and sun could affect the appearance of your gems.

Many of our rings are made using 18ct gold; due to the purity of the metal 18ct gold is quite soft and therefore needs to be treated with care.

Eternity Rings:

Because the gemstones are set all the way around Eternity rings are susceptible to damage on all sides.  The setting and the stones can both be damaged by hard knocks which can occur when working with your hands, doing exercise etc. Please be aware of this.

Care of your casts

Polished bronze casts should be cleaned with ‘Brasso’ and we recommend using the Brasso ‘wadding’ rather than the liquid.

Patinated bronze casts should be gently dusted using a soft cloth, they should not be over cleaned, scrubbed or washed as this will remove the patination.

Glass casts should be gently dusted using a soft cloth.

Nickel plated casts should be gently dusted using a soft cloth, they should not be over cleaned, scrubbed or washed as this could damage the surface and engraving.

Silver plated casts should be gently dusted using a soft cloth, they should not be over cleaned, scrubbed or washed as this could damage the surface and engraving and possibly remove the plating.

Solid, sterling silver casts should be cleaned using ‘Silvo’ and we recommend using the Silvo ‘wadding’ rather than the liquid.

If you have any questions regarding caring for your casts please do not hesitate to contact us, we would be happy to help.
