Engraving
Yes, engraving is included in the price. The price of each charm includes engraving of a single fingerprint on one side and a small inscription on the other side e.g. a name, initial/s, date of birth, etc (max 35 characters for larger pieces). Alternatively, we could engrave a fingerprint on each side of a single charm with the option of having a small initial beside each corresponding print. If you wanted full names under each print, this comes at an extra cost. If you could let us know the names, we will provide you with a quote for the extra engraving.
The prints are always supplied by the client, we do not engrave a generic print. Once an order has been placed, we send out an ink kit. Each kit includes an ink strip, instructions on how to take the prints, an engraving form and a return envelope. Once we receive the prints back, we will check whether they can be used or not. If we require another set, we will let you know so keep the ink strip safe!
Our engraver can usually work from a scan or photo. We usually ask for the file to be sent to us via email so we can double check whether the print can be used or not.
While we are known for our fingerprint jewellery, we also offer other types of engraving, such as initials, monograms, family crests and seals. We can also engrave dog paws and copy handwriting as well as drawings. Please be aware that this may incur an additional cost. Do get in touch directly for a quote.
It really depends on how defined the prints are. Babies develop fingerprints in the womb, but they might not become defined until they’re a few weeks old. We normally suggest waiting until the baby is 4 to 6 weeks old. Our ink kits don’t dry if stored correctly, so you can keep trying over a period of time and then send us all the attempts. If you are unsure about the quality of the prints, do send us pictures at customercare@philippaherbert.co.uk and we will let you know whether they can be used or not. Don’t worry if they look a bit smudgy, these often can be used too.
Yes, we can engrave any fingerprint as long as there are lines to be engraved. If in doubt, send us some images at customercare@philippaherbert.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
With print actual size, our engraver will copy the print on the charm as it is on paper, only neatening up the edges and smudges if needed. If the print is too big for the charm, he will select the central part of the print (the one with the most details). With print to edge, our engraver will continue the lines within the prints so they seamlessly fill the space.
Jewellery
Of course. In this case you will need to send us the original charm so we can attach the new jump ring.
Yes, we do keep a record of what is engraved on our charms. Prints are kept on file unless the client requests otherwise.
Of course! Just let us know via email and we can process the order manually our end and give you instructions on how to proceed.
You can start by getting in touch with us either via email or phone. We will talk you through the different options and explain how it all works. Once you are ready to go ahead with an order, we will send over an invoice.
If based in London, you can also ask for a consultation where you will be able to chat with Sally or Philippa, the directors of the business, in person and see samples.
Increasingly in the last few years we have been reworking old pieces of jewellery to create new pieces that our clients can wear every day. To get started, you can send us an email with a few photos and a general idea of what you would like and we can go from there.
How to care for your jewellery
Of course you can. The surface of our engravable charms is highly polished so when two or more charms are worn together, they can get scratched a little bit.
We also supply a small polishing cloth with each order.
We only work with solid sterling silver and solid 18ct and 9ct yellow, rose and white gold. None of our pieces are plated. This means that our jewellery will not tarnish and can be worn in water.
